Blues Trip USA 2023: Exploring the Southern United States Music Scene

Exploring the Heart of Blues: A Journey through the Southern United States

In September 2023, Nicola and Hannes Folterbauer, the CEOs of Wolf Records, embarked on a musical pilgrimage through the southern United States, uncovering the rich tapestry of blues culture and history that runs deep in this region.

Memphis, TN – Where Blues Legends Roam

Their journey began in Memphis, Tennessee, a city steeped in blues history. Their first destination was the Blues Foundation, but their plans hit a roadblock when they discovered that the office was closed on a Monday. However, serendipity led them to an unexpected encounter with Little Milton, who was sitting at the entrance of the foundation. A chance meeting with a blues legend set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.

The duo also made a poignant visit to Graceland, the iconic home of Elvis Presley. Amidst the splendor of the estate, they paid their respects at the grave of Elvis’s daughter, Lisa Maria, who had tragically passed away earlier in the year.

Southaven, MI – A Hidden Blues Gem

Their next stop was Southaven, Mississippi, where they stumbled upon a Blues marker honoring the legendary Robert Nighthawk while exploring a shopping center. This serendipitous discovery highlighted the fact that blues legends can be found in unexpected corners of the South.

Clarksdale, MS – The Birthplace of Muddy Waters

Clarksdale, Mississippi, holds a special place in the history of the blues as the birthplace of Muddy Waters. Here, the intrepid travelers spent two nights at the historic Clarkhouse, which happens to be the oldest building in Clarksdale. Their visit was punctuated by an encounter with Watermelon Slim, a musician who graced the establishment with his music every night.

The duo also explored the Cat Head Store, a haven for blues enthusiasts, where they found a treasure trove of CDs and books that delved into the rich musical heritage of the region. One notable discovery was a new biography of Robert Johnson, titled ‘A Biography of a Phantom.’ Additionally, they explored the Delta Blues Museum and the Riverside Hotel, both of which have hosted countless legendary artists over the years, making them integral stops on any blues aficionado’s journey

Indianola, MS – A Tribute to B.B. King

The journey took them to Indianola, Mississippi, where they visited the B.B. King Museum. The museum provided an immersive experience, featuring a plethora of videos showcasing B.B. King’s extraordinary talent, a display of his Grammy Awards, and a collection of his iconic guitars. However, the visit was bittersweet, as they also encountered the final resting place of the beloved bluesman himself.

Nicola and Hannes Folterbauer’s Blues Trip USA was a testament to the enduring legacy of blues music in the American South. Their encounters with blues legends, exploration of historical sites, and immersion in the blues culture left an indelible mark, reminding us all of the profound impact this genre has had on the world of music. As they continued their journey, one could only imagine the new discoveries and musical encounters awaiting them in this land of blues and soul.
