We are thrilled to share an outstanding review of Jerry McCain’s Blues Party, featured in the October edition of Back to the Roots magazine (#128). This album, produced by us, is a tribute to the legendary harmonica player and songwriter, Jerry McCain, whose impact on the blues world remains indelible.
In this review, Back to the Roots emphasizes McCain’s deep-rooted influence, calling him a “groundbreaking harmonica player” and applauding his ability to leave a lasting impression on blues music. Born in Atalla, Alabama, McCain was known for his authentic “down-home blues” style, which resonates throughout Blues Party. The album contains seventeen tracks, including live performances, each capturing McCain’s dynamic energy. A highlight on the album, “Mama’s Pride,” a soulful studio ballad, serves as a heartfelt tribute to his parents.
Back to the Roots provides fascinating context for this album, noting McCain’s impressive career, including his songwriting prowess with tracks like “She’s Tough,” famously covered by The Fabulous Thunderbirds. On Blues Party, McCain is supported by The King Bees, featuring Rob “Hound Dog” Baskerville on guitar, Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni on bass, and drummers Russ Wilson, Mike Rhoades, and Dave Barbour. The album also includes special guest appearances from notable artists Chick Willis and Nappy Brown, both of whom, like McCain, have sadly passed away, making these recordings all the more precious.
This collection is a fitting testament to McCain’s musical legacy, capturing his essence through songs like “I Got The Blues All Over Me” and Chicago blues anthems such as “I Used To Have It” and “Burn The Crack House Down.” The gospel-tinged “Hotrod Ford” and the worker’s tune “Let Me Tell You Pretty Baby” further showcase McCain’s versatility. Additionally, Elmore James’ “Look On Yonder Wall,” sung by Queen Bee Zamagni, adds depth to this dynamic album.
We are proud to have produced this album, and we thank Back to the Roots magazine for their thoughtful review, which beautifully captures Jerry McCain’s musical genius and the spirit of Blues Party.
