“Rockin’ This House” by Sunnyland Slim – CD of the Month in Blues & Rhythm

We’re proud to announce that our latest release, Sunnyland Slim – Rockin’ This House, has been selected as “Release of the Month” in the prestigious Blues & Rhythm magazine!

This live recording captures the legendary pianist and vocalist Sunnyland Slim in electrifying form during a 1975 performance in Vienna, Austria, organized by the Vienna Blues Fan Club. With a setlist that includes powerful renditions of classics like “Got to Get to My Baby,” “Rockin’ the House,” “Stormy Monday,” and “Travelin’ Blues,” the CD is a true gem for fans of traditional Chicago blues.

Reviewer Tony Burke highlights Sunnyland Slim’s “fantastic form” and praises the “crystal clear” audio quality of this archival recording. What makes this performance so special is the intimate club setting, where Slim – then still actively performing into the 1970s – channels the spirit of blues legends like Roosevelt Sykes, Little Brother Montgomery, and his own unique flair. Backed only by his piano and vocals, Slim delivers a soulful, energetic, and often humorous set that had the audience clapping and cheering in delight.

Burke notes that Slim “was an instantly recognisable artist” and calls this CD “a very vivid souvenir of his talents,” particularly applauding the alternate performances and blues medleys that showcase Slim’s deep connection to the tradition and its storytellers, including nods to Robert Johnson, Elmore James, and Charles Brown.

This CD is not just a live album—it’s a time capsule, a rare and vivid documentation of a blues master delivering raw, authentic music in front of a deeply appreciative audience. It’s no surprise that Burke ends the review with a hopeful nod for a second volume!
