On August 7, we honor the birthday of one of the true giants of the Chicago Blues – Magic Slim. Born Morris Holt in Torrance, Mississippi in 1937, Magic Slim brought raw power, soulful intensity, and unmistakable authenticity to every note he played. At Wolf Records, we are proud to have worked with this legendary artist and to keep his musical spirit alive through our releases.

Magic Slim’s journey from the cotton fields of Mississippi to the electrifying blues clubs of Chicago is the stuff of blues history. After losing his little finger in a cotton gin accident, Slim switched from piano to guitar, developing a fierce, aggressive style that became his trademark. His deep vocals, stinging guitar tone, and commanding presence quickly earned him a place among the blues greats.

Slim moved to Chicago in the 1950s and played alongside Magic Sam, who gave him the nickname “Magic Slim.” By the 1970s, Slim had formed his own band, The Teardrops, and established himself as a major force in the modern blues scene. Together, they delivered gritty, no-nonsense blues night after night, from Chicago’s West Side clubs to stages around the world.

Wolf Records is proud to have released several of Magic Slim’s recordings, capturing the energy and soul of a true blues master. His work with us showcases his dedication to the roots of the genre and his ability to connect with audiences like few others.

On what would have been his birthday, we remember Magic Slim not only as an incredible musician but also as a humble, generous soul who lived and breathed the blues. His influence continues to inspire new generations of blues artists and fans alike.

Thank you, Magic Slim, for the music, the memories, and the magic. You are deeply missed but never forgotten.
